Windermere Presbyterian is happy to introduce our minister,
John R. Pflug, Jr.
I was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on the 15th of October in 1984. After about a year in Oklahoma my family moved to Texas where we have been since then. When I was in the third grade my father entered Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and became a United Methodist Pastor, and my mother has been a school teacher since that time. In 1990 my family adopted my sister Kimberly (who now lives and works near Royse City, Tx.)
In my elementary and middle school years my family moved around the Northeast Texas area. At various times we lived in the Texas cities of Rockwall, Paris, Keller, Rowlett, and finally Commerce. At Commerce High School I was very active all around. I lettered in five different varsity sports. My junior year our football team won the state championship. My senior year I was elected student body president, and in 2003 graduated in the top ten percent of my class. From there I went on to attend Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Tx. I played football for my first year in college, and was elected to serve as a student senator. The most wonderful part about my time at TLU was meeting my wife Brittany.
In our last year at TLU Brittany and I were engaged to be married. We began to drive every Sunday morning to Austin, Tx. (where Brittany is originally from). There, we joined University Presbyterian Church where we were married in September of 2007.
After graduation from college, followed by our September marriage, Brittany began work with a property management firm in downtown Austin while I began seminary at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Three years later, in 2010, we had one of the biggest years of our lives. Our daughter Emma was born on June 1st that year, two days after my graduation from seminary. And on June 9th our family moved to Winnsboro, Texas where I had accepted the call to be pastor of First Presbyterian Church.
My favorite aspect of being a minister is preaching. I love to proclaim the Word of God. I also love people and delight in sharing the grace and love of Jesus Christ in a way that builds relationships and communities. Above all I love to see when the saving gospel of Jesus finds lost souls, heals broken relationships, and glorifies God through authentic, faithful lives.
In addition to serving the church, I served as the youngest mayor of Winnsboro in the city’s history, a member of the Economic Development Corporation, a board member of the Winnsboro Community Resource Center, President of the Ministerial Alliance, and Chairman of the Presbytery Life Committee for Grace Presbytery.
Family and Home Time
In my leisure time I enjoy running, swimming, and reading. I love to be at the beach because the ocean reminds me of the Bigness of God!! (which is a delightful bonus in moving to Wilmington). For you all I can pretend to be a Redskins or Panthers fan, but please know that in the secrecy of my own on Sunday afternoons I will be cheering for America’s Team- The Dallas Cowboys! Emma loves school; she is a fast learner and has been in gymnastics for the last two years. Brittany enjoys working part-time as a substitute teacher, and a wonderful full-time mother. We all enjoy eating at new and exciting restaurants, meeting new people, as well as having quiet nights in when we can watch a movie and grill a few steaks.
Future at Windermere
We are so excited about the new family of faith that awaits us at Windermere, and the wonderful opportunities for the gospel available in Wilmington, North Carolina. It is a big change for a Texas family to become a North Carolina family, but we serve a BIG God who has opened this door to big and wonderful things. I hope to see you, love you, and serve Christ with you all very soon.
